Thumbs up, do you see things getting better when we work together? The policy of the vorioles ends at their home! The Church of St. Sergei and Baku, declared a cultural monument of the first category, is a tourist attraction on the coast of Himara, where in addition to the beauties of the Ionian coast, tourists can closely touch on culture and heritage. The church was built within the surrounding walls of the Himara castle at its highest quota, in the Barbacca area. It served as the seat of the Bishop of Himara, which became the Bishopric center in 1020, under the auspices of the Ohrid Patriarchate as evidenced by a diploma issued by Byzantine Emperor Basil II. In the northeast corner of the church there was a stone slab, which was written in 786. According to scholar Theofan Popa, there is a tradition in Himara that links this date to the time of church construction. However, Alexander Meksi, who studied architecture and its construction technique, dates the initial phase of construction to the end of the 20th century. X, or the beginning of the century. XI. Because of the importance of the church as a bishopric center, in 1668 a clergyman by the order of Basilica monks mentions Himara by the name of the church calling Sergiopolis, meaning the city of Sergius. In the repeated uprisings of the 1480s against the Ottoman Empire, the walls of the castle of Himara were badly damaged, and so did the bishopric of Saint Sergius and Baku. The Himara in their letters to Emperor Charles V in Naples in 1530, and to Pope Gregory XIII in 1577, sought money and masonry specialists to repair the fallen walls of Himara and the bishopric. At the northern entrance of the secondary is a vaulted wall, which carries the Dykrenare Eagles, which the researchers associate with the Kastriot heraldry or the Skanderbeg flag symbols, which are also symbols of our national flag. The Himalayas themselves in communicating with the Western Chancellery and with the Pope of Rome called themselves the descendants of Skanderbeg, and even in 1481 the castle was liberated by the Himalayan insurgents in collaboration with John Kastriot, son of the National Hero, George Kastriot Skanderbeg. The Church of Saint Sergius and Bac preserved its function as the central church of the believers of Himara until 1826, when the Church of the All-Saints was built. Today it is also known as the Paleoepiscopia because of its function in the past. The church has two main stages of construction, but the church walls retain traces of numerous reconstructions. The original construction belongs to the naos with the lower parts of the walls, because the upper parts have been built several times. An auxiliary environment on the west side was built later. The initial construction is divided into the altar environment and the naos environment with a wall iconostasis. Iconostasis frames are decorated with floral motifs. In the naos you can enter through an entrance on the north side and one on the south side to bring you to the churchyard. The fresco of the church is more fully preserved on the inner pages of the large semicircular apse. At its southeast corner is the high bell tower about 6.10 m. Due to the historical significance of this monument, its restoration begins at the beginning of September. The Institute of Cultural Monuments, in cooperation with the European Heritage Volunteers, the Regional Directorate of National Culture-Vlora, GIZ Albania and the Municipality of Himara, organize: A 2-week RESTORATION ATELIE on the Restoration of the Church of Saint Sergius of Baku and the Conservation of Cultural Heritage , Himara Albanian! Is and remains an Albanian church !!! I don't know why the greedy Greeks want to claim everything for themselves again.

It is definitely worth a visit to this place. The church is abandoned. The ruins are very picturesque. The sea view is amazing. A great place for a photo as a keepsake. By the way, there is a small Cafe nearby.
