At the beginning of the 18th century, in 1721, the first small chapel in honor of St. John was built on the Innrain. Just a few years later, in the immediate vicinity of this chapel, the construction of a larger church began. The church, originally located on the outskirts of the city, is now in the center of a district in which the Leopold-Franzens University and the Medical University and their various facilities and institutes, clinics, libraries, student dormitories and canteens are located. It has been its own pastoral care center in the heart of Innsbruck for more than 265 years. In any case, during the lecture period it is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and every Wednesday from 7.30 p.m. to 10 p.m. the gospel and spiritual choir of the Innsbruck University Parish where students sing along.
