Monolith
Reviews

It's just a monolith in the middle of streets.
Helmuth Nussbaumer (05/04/2019)
This monolith is the northern survey point (triangulation point) of the so-called "Wiener Neustädter Basis". From this the entire monarchy was measured. On the one hand to know the exact size of the land (tax revenue), on the other hand to create accurate maps. Originally, the location was closer to the city, opposite the Liesganig monument. Joseph Liesganig (1719-1799) was commissioned with the survey. At that time the distance between north and south base point (shortly before Neunkirchen) 12,158 m. Residual measurements in the 20th century revealed a deviation of a few millimeters per kilometer.
