Schmirn is a tiny place that is still extremely remote and, when there are no mountain sports enthusiasts, very lonely. It is reached via a steep, good road that winds up in bends into the high valley. Chains are needed in snow. The valley is beautiful. How lonely it must have been here a few hundred years ago when the village was cut off from the Wipptal with meter-high snow and avalanches.
If you drive down to Schmirn at the end of the valley, you will be greeted in astonishment by a church whose dimensions are hardly to be expected. It should definitely be visited. Upon entering, the visitor is overwhelmed by the splendor that was hardly to be expected. Now the traveler understands why Tyrol is also called the "Holy Land". Not only is the density of the churches unique, the splendor of even small village churches is probably unique. Even strict Catholic Spain cannot keep up.
The parish church, which is consecrated to Saint Joseph, was built in 1757 by none other than Franz de Paula Penz, which is also surprising, because such a "star" of that time built it in Schmirn. Paula Penz built a long list of churches and chapels in Tyrol with an enormous thirst for action, his main work is the Basilica of Wilten (1751-1755).
The state of preservation of this protected work of art is fabulous.
