Just love these statues!
Beautiful sphinx! We visited Vienna on our honeymoon and also visited the Belvedere Garden. We really enjoyed the time there, a beautifully landscaped garden that makes history tangible. A must in Vienna.
Beautiful statues in the garden, unfortunately not everyone does not hang around climbing on them.
Generally well preserved.
A beautiful statue.
The climb to the Upper Belvedere is lined with numerous, very individually designed Sphinx figures, who guard the palace as it were. Compared to their Egyptian and Greek models an emphasis is placed on the breasts, which is probably typical of the Baroque period. Thanks to their Egyptian origins, the Sphinx was then very popular with Freemasons, which included the builder of the castle, Prince Eugen.
