This monument stands in tribute to Ludwig von Beethoven,
The monument is a bronze sculptural group with Beethoven at it’s centre. The sculptural group all sit on a stepped pedestal. At the bottom are 9 youths, an allusion to the 9 symphonies composed by Beethoven. Flanking the pedestal are Prometheus and Nike, an allegorical reference to the deliverance and victory of the music of Beethoven. Finally, atop the pedestal is a stereotypical image of Beethoven with his famously curled hair and moody look.
A fine monument to a fine composer. Sadly, the monument is off the main tourist circuit, but it’s worth a look if you’re in the area.
nice oasis in the middle of a concrete city. This part of town needs more small resting places. Especially in the summer, because the Lothringerstraße is such a dry, treeless patch in the middle of beautiful Vienna! This park saved me many times as I visited the Austrian Motor Club around the corner, because Beethoven and trees. Nice! Thanks!
Classical music lovers shouldn't forget visiting this monument in Vienna.
The Society of Music Friends set up a committee with the Chairman Nikolaus Dumba on 7 February 1871 regarding the construction of a Beethoven monument . This committee wrote a competition on 5 May 1873 and invited the sculptors Carl Kundmann , Anton Paul Wagner , John Benk and Caspar von Zumbusch. On 18 February 1874, the jury assessed the submitted designs and declared Zumbusch the winner. After certain changes, the shape of the monument was approved on 4 March 1875. [1] in 1878, the cast model of the monument that now in the foyer of was Vienna Konzerthaus is, in the Paris World Exhibitionpresented and awarded a gold medal
