19.7.2011:
In memory of Johanna Dohnal, the artist Isabella Kresse developed the project "Birken für Johanna". As a counterpoint to the lack of presence of female names in place names in Vienna, birch trees were planted in 23 parks named after men.
Isabella Kresse on the project idea: "Just as the birch finds its way as a pioneer plant in new, not yet populated habitats, Johanna Dohnal has penetrated political wasteland as one of the outstanding figures in Austrian women's policy and has shown resilience."
The presentation took place on July 19, 2011 in Haydnpark (1120 Vienna). With it:
Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek, Federal Minister for Women and Public Service
Sandra Frauenberger, City Councilor for Integration, Women's Issues, Consumer Protection and Human Resources
Gabriele Votava, District Manager Vienna 12
Hedwig Saxenhuber, curator and critic
The artist Hans Scheirl read from "Stone Butch Blues" by the transgender writer Leslie Feinberg.
