I miss all my teachers

For 7 years from 1957 to 1963, I was at Belmont Primary School and along with many other wonderful memories, one of the most vivid of all was that there was a real old style, old world bakery not more than 100 meters from the school. And I do remember that for the very young kids in the first 2 or 3 years, every morning the teacher would have one of us go to this bakery to collect bread for the staff. Teacher's pets were usually picked but we all had turns I'm sure. And at the bakery which was down a cobble stone paved laneway with creepers across a pergola above and out the back were the stables for the horses and depots for the carts...... At the bakery the kind staff would always fill our order and then slice a warm fresh just baked horseshoe roll with poppy seeds on top, fill it with butter which melted in a moment and that was our reward. My last request might be just this.nFor 7 years whenever the 'Easterly' wafted over our school every morning, we could smell freshly baked bread and this truly was traditionally baked bread using wood fired ovens and properly mixed dough. It was torture but then at the two nearby lunch shops, fresh warm poppy seed horseshoe and Vienna rolls were sold with cold meats and salads at lunch time. They used margarine. The bakery used butter. And to make life simply perfect for kids who probably were the luckiest in Perth, the lunch shops all those years ago also sold 'real Coca Cola'. Real bread and real Coke and our whole lives ahead of us and perhaps the only kids who could have had it better than us, might have been Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn themselves. And with the river just across the highway, many of us lived exactly that very lifestyle all throughout our young years. I certainly did.
