I was a student at Southern Vales for 8 years straight for most of my primary schooling and middle school years. I went to the Morphett Vale campus and can say without a doubt that the school was lacking.
Bullying occurred daily without being properly dealt with even when reported on multiple occasions. This wasn't just for me however, I watched as many children over the years were subject to bullying in all kinds of situations and NOT ONCE was this handled appropriately.
There is also a huge case of nepotism in this school were select students are treated with the most attention and given the most awards. Not to say some didn't deserve these awards but in most circumstances it seemed a little unfair. Why is it that only certain children were given attention over the rest and were listened to on a regular basis?
The school is also two-faced to the point where what the teachers were saying wasn't lining up with their actions. Not only this but nothing is what it seems at the school and the principal isn't around often enough. Yes, being a principal is A LOT of work but i have met some of the previous principals and they were frequently at the school during the day. On numerous occasions in assemblies the students have been told that Mrs Nelson couldn't make it because she was busy. There are more examples but going into detail about them could cause a lot of drama inside the school's staff.
The school is also VERY SMALL and as the years go by, the numbers of people who stay are decreasing. It has gotten to the point where the school has only ONE class per grade!
The primary school is pretty antiquate with some minor issues based on what i remember but the senior school is in need of a serious makeover quite literally. The school looks boring and dull which DOES NOT help young enquiring minds and the academic level being taught is unsatisfactory.
Now with everything i have addressed, the parents of the children who go to this school are really nice and lovely people. They are supportive of all the children and from what I have seen just want to be friends and teach their children from right and wrong.
There are also some really lovely teachers there. Some of which I regret never being taught by because I left last year. Mrs Von Alpen, Mr Snape and so many others! I do have to say year 7 & 8 were great years soley because of the homeroom teachers i had.
I learnt a lot from Mr Bailey (yr 7) because even though he had just begun his journey of teaching, he understood the students and had a real passion for in depth conversations about God and the Bible. Both him and Mr Davidson were teachers who encouraged deep thinking within the students, giving them an understanding of not taking things at face value. In these two years i lost people i thought were my friends (especially last year) but i grew a lot. I can thank Mr Davidson for guiding me through some really hard stuff even though he didn't know all the facts. On my last day there i did cry because he said to me, "I am proud of you and have seen how much you have grown through out this year, good luck." Those words will stick with me forever.
If I''m giving a review, i would give 10 stars to my last two teachers and the ones i wish i was taught by.
Southern Vales was not a good experience for me as a student for 10 + years I can tell any new families that this school is very bad. From communication to teaching to learning everything is handled poorly and everything they want is really just your money they care more about their own self image than they do about actual students this is a shame. Also most teachers at this school present the school in an extremely negative way
Southern Vales is place that really helps students grow in their capacity and their ability to achieve great results. I was genuinely impressed with the care factor of the teachers, principal and the staff. It was at this school that I went from feeling and performing like an underachiever to getting high results because the teachers encouraged me that I was valuable and capable of doing much more than I thought. Teachers also showed great care for student’s general wellbeing and most importantly were constantly sharing the love of God. This school is really Christ centred and it challenged and grew my faith massively. A big thank you to the school because it made me much more confident in how good God is, as well as my ability academically. I made life long friends there and am a big fan of the staff as well.
My Daughter has grown tremendously in her achievements since attending this School 🙂
Moving to Southern Vales in high school was one of the best decisions I ever made! I was warmly welcomed by students, deeply cared for by teachers and surrounded by kind staff. This school taught me the importance of respecting others, responsibility, hard work and most importantly, the life changing experiences of knowing God.
