From the start there were communication problems. Online studies allows lecturers to hide from students. With no tutors to assist, students are left on their own to resolve problems. The intensive courses don't give you the time to learn from mistakes. For example, if I had received results from my first assignment before I completed my second and had the opportunity to discuss the results with my lecturer or tutor, I would have adapted by writing style. A simple video on how to present your information in that particular discipline would have been of great help. To be fair to James Cook, my knowledge of data analysis was basic but you do attend classes to learn. Many of the problems I have experienced could be solved with better access to teaching staff and a little more forethought in course design. On the positive side my student liaison did her best to assist me.
If you cherish free speech you would be well advised to steer clear of this institution.
I get to see my old friends
James Cook University (JCU) is a public university in North Queensland, Australia. The second oldest university in Queensland, JCU is a teaching and research institution. The university's main campuses are located in the tropical cities of Cairns and Townsville, and one in the city state of Singapore. JCU also has study centres in Mount Isa, Mackay and Thursday Island. A Brisbane campus, operated by Russo Higher Education, delivers undergraduate and postgraduate courses to international students. The University’s main fields of research include marine sciences, biodiversity, sustainable management of tropical ecosystems, genetics and genomics, tropical health care, tourism and engineering.
Now years after completing a degree here my advice would be to only study here if you plan on beginning work for some years in the local Queensland/North Queensland area after completing studies.
A degree from this lesser known University does not have the same value as a degree from a bigger University in the cities of Australia or from more well known international Universities. Therefore you will be at a competitive disadvantage if moving away from the area after completing studies.
