In 2013, the Commission to Preserve National Monuments declared a Historical Monument - the Church of the Ascension of the Lord with an iconostasis in Gračanica, a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Church of the Ascension of the Lord in Gračanica, built in 1926, stands out with its position as a significant element in the city's ambient whole. The temple belongs to the type of cubic building with a dome, two bell towers on the west side and an apse on the east side.
The frescoes of the Church of the Ascension of the Lord were made in the period from 1986 to 1989. The simple iconostasis of the Gračanica church has been preserved entirely in situ. The iconostasis is made of wood and decorated with a simple profile. The iconostasis bears twelve icons arranged in two straight horizontal lines. In terms of style, it reflects the spirit of neoclassicism, while the icons are influenced by the Russian Baroque.
After the end of the First World War, the work of the Serbian Orthodox Church School Municipality in Gračanica was revived. The head of that municipality was Luka Milisavljević, who through the Church-School Board tried to normalize the religious life of the Orthodox population in the area of the Gračanica parish as soon as possible, so he initiated several activities. Among other things, listing and repairing the damage done to the Orthodox Church-School Municipality during the war.
In the area of the upper part of Srpska Varoš, there was an Orthodox church of smaller dimensions, which was demolished due to its dilapidation. Members of the Church Board (including Hadžistević, Ivanišević, Blagojević) began advocating the construction of a new Orthodox church in Gračanica. The Orthodox Church Municipality sent a request to the City Administration to allocate a new site for the construction of the church in the city center, with the explanation that it intends to build a larger building, with three domes. Construction of the church began in 1921 and was completed in 1926. The parish church of the Ascension of the Lord was consecrated in 1925. The consecration was performed by the Bishop of Sabac, Mihajlo.
The temple belongs to the type of cruciform cubic building with a dome, two bell towers on the west side and an apse on the east side. With its longitudinal axis, the temple is oriented in the direction east (apse) - west (entrance), which shows a slight deviation in the direction northeast-southwest. The base of the church has the shape of a free Greek cross. The overall external dimensions are: measured on the east-west axis 19.12 meters, or measured on the north-south axis 13.16 meters.
The load-bearing walls of the church are about 90 cm thick, the non-load-bearing walls of the church are 60 cm thick, they are built of baked brick, and plastered on the inside and outside, as well as the walls of the church bell tower.
Window openings for lighting the interior of the church have semicircular finishes, and the penetrations of all window openings through the body of the walls in which they are located have conical shapes for better lighting inside the church.
The frescoes of the Church of the Ascension of the Lord were made in the period from 1986 to 1989. The temple was painted by the academic painter Dimitrij Ridžiski, although without a theological education he respected the thematic program of painting, but also the iconographic canons in general.
The simple iconostasis is completely preserved, and dates from the time of construction of the church itself (dimensions approximately 6.30 m x 5.20 m). The iconostasis is made of wood and decorated with a simple profile that suggests an architectural element, a pillar whose function is to separate the fields with icons. The construction of the iconostasis is also decorated with six identical carved arches above the icons and six crosses in the lower part of the first zone. The iconostasis bears twelve icons arranged in two straight horizontal lines. The iconostasis reflects the spirit of neoclassicism while the icons are influenced by the Russian Baroque. The construction of the iconostasis is golden brown while the woodcut is painted white.
The composition of the iconostasis can be divided into two horizontal zones of the thematic program with a large Crucifixion at the top.
The building was renovated during the 1980s. On that occasion, rehabilitation works were done on the church: the old roof of the church was changed from galvanized sheet metal, which was worn out and damaged, with a cover made of copper sheet ...
