Municipality of Šekovići The Šekovići municipality is located in the Republic of Srpska - the northeastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the mouth of the Lovnica river in Drinjač, and generally coincides with the territory of Donji Birč and has an area of 232 km². It is 40 km away from Zvornik, 50 km from Tuzla and 100 km from Sarajevo. Municipality of Šeković Republika Srpska The municipality of Šekovići has five local communities. These are: Šekovići, Željeznik, Tišča, Papraća and Kaštijelj. The Šekovići Municipality is an oasis of untouched nature, at an altitude of 320 m. It is surrounded by mountain peaks of Javornik, Bišina, Borogov and Bačkovac. The Drinjača River is the main waterway of the Šekoviči municipality and has a relatively peaceful course surrounded by fertile fields. It is a 2.5 km long river called Lovnica. HISTORY The Šekovci region, from the Romans to the present day, has cut across important roads connecting the areas east of the Drina and central Bosnia. In the village of Strmici, at Gradina, professor Milutin Garashanin discovered in 1975 an Illyrian settlement dating from the 4th century BC, which confirmed the assumption that Illyrians lived in this area before the arrival of Slovenes. The Šekovići were named after one part of the inhabitants who came from Šekovina in Herzegovina at the end of the 17th century. They continued to call themselves Shekhovljani, while neighboring Donji Birač began to call Šekovići. Until the end of the seventeenth century, the Šekovići were relatively densely populated, and military wreckage and illnesses were eradicated and almost destroyed by old inhabitants, and new ones from Herzegovina came to their place, which make up the largest part of today's population. It is believed that the municipality of Šekovići was inhabited by residents of eastern Herzegovina, from the area of Gacko and Nevesinje. Before the Second World War, Šekovići as a settlement did not exist. There was only a gendarmerie station. The villages around Sekovici were densely populated. After the Second World War, the mid-seventies came to the development of the Šekovići municipality. FON, Marble, Elastik, Zanus factories were opened, a secondary school, a kindergarten, a Culture Center, a residential building were built. The factories were employed by residents of surrounding villages, who, after their occupation, made housing facilities, and Sekovici began to get contours of the urban environment. Municipality of Šekovići Stećci It should be noted that at the beginning of the seventeenth century Šekovici left the ancestors of Ilija Bircanin and Prote Mateje Nenadović, and the relational connections established the military cooperation of this region with Serbia in the First Serbian Uprising. Of the medieval monuments, in the area of Šeković, over 900 stećci were preserved in 52 locations. The most important and most beautiful monuments of the material culture of this area are two medieval monasteries, the Monastery of the Annunciation in Papraca and the monastery of St. George in Lovnica.
