The cathedral in Visegrad is dedicated to the Birth of the Most Holy Mother of God or the Little Lady. This feast of the Mother of God is celebrated on September 21.
We will mention that this holiday is also the glory of the Municipality of Visegrad, not only of the institution but also of the entire devout people who live in its area and seek and expect help from God and the Most Holy Mother of God.
We do not have detailed information about the Visegrad Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God on Megdan. We know that the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God in Visegrad was built from 1884 to 1886. Even before this time, the Serbs tried to build a place of worship, but the Turkish authorities obstructed the construction of the church.
The Austro-Hungarian occupation in 1878 created more favorable opportunities for the realization of the idea of building a temple. The still strong Turkish influence in the city itself disrupted plans to build an Orthodox church in or near the city. According to the data from the annals, the Turks gave land for construction on Banpolje hill - two kilometers above Visegrad - which the Serbs did not want to accept.
In the end, the Austro-Hungarian government gave the land on Megdan, where the church is still located today, and built a road to the church. Before that, according to teacher Ljubomir Popović, prayers to God were offered in a private house from 1878 to 1884, it is not written whose or where. In those more favorable political conditions, the Serbs built the temple in 1886. We have no data on the history of the church from that time until the Second World War. During World War II, the church was devastated because bombs fell in the very port of the church and the tower cracked.
It was turned into a warehouse and residence of the German army, where soldiers camped and lit a fire.
Immediately after the departure and withdrawal of the Germans, the church was renovated, and in 1946, an envoy of the Metropolitan of Dabro-Bosnia consecrated the church.
Since then, "the Holy Liturgy has been sung in it again" to the joy of all believers ...
