The Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian was the son of the fisherman Zebedee and Salome, the daughter of Joseph, the betrothed of the Holy Mother of God. Called by the Lord Jesus, John immediately left his father and the fishing nets, and followed Christ with his brother James. From the Lord Christ, he would be called the "son of thunder", since his theology was to be heard like thunder all over the world and to fill the whole earth. And he went after his gentle Master, learning the wisdom that came out of his mouth; and the Lord Christ loved him very much for his perfect innocence and extraordinary virginal chastity. The Savior's divine love for him was so extraordinary that the Holy Gospel says of him that he was "a disciple whom Jesus loved." And among the twelve apostles, the Lord singled him out as the most excellent, and he was one of the three of His closest disciples to whom the Lord revealed His divine secrets many times. Thus, when Jairus' daughter was resurrected, the Lord took with Him only Peter, James and John, to be witnesses of that. Likewise, when He was transfigured on Tabor and showed the glory of His Deity, the Lord did it again only in the presence of these three chosen disciples. And when he prayed in the garden of Gethsemane, the Lord was not there without John, because he said to the disciples: Sit there while I go there to pray to God. And taking Peter and the two sons of Zebedee (that is, James and John), they became anxious and began to complain (Matt. 26: 36-37). Everywhere John, as a beloved disciple, was inseparable from Christ. And how much the Lord Christ loved John can be seen from the fact that at the Last Supper John put his head against the breast of Jesus. For when the Lord announced at the Last Supper that one of the disciples would betray Him, and the disciples looked at each other and wondered who he was talking about, then the disciple whom Jesus loved lay on Jesus' chest and asked him: Lord, who is this? The Lord answered: He is the one to whom I give a bite by dipping. And he dipped the morsel and gave it to Judas Iscariot (John 13: 21-26). The Lord loved John so much that he was the only one who had the freedom to put his head on His chest and boldly ask him about the secret of betrayal. But John also had a greater love for this Master than the other apostles: for at the time of the Savior's voluntary suffering all the disciples forsook their Shepherd and fled, and he alone watched incessantly all the sufferings of Christ, suffering with all his heart, weeping and weeping with the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mother of the Lord, do not even depart with Her from the Son of God who suffered for us to the very cross and death. That is why he would be crucified under the cross by the Lord to the Immaculate Virgin Mary. For the Lord, hanging on the cross, and seeing the Mother and the disciple when he loved where they stood, said to His Mother: Woman, here is your son! Then said he unto the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to him (John 19: 25-27). And he had her as his mother with every respect, and he served her until her honorable and glorious success. And on the day of her ascension, when the honorable and holy body of the Mother of God was carried to be buried, St. John wore in front of her scaffold an unusually radiant royal scepter, which the Archangel Gabriel brought to the Immaculate Virgin, informing her of her transition from earth to heaven. When the holy apostle was over a hundred years old, he left the house of Domna with seven of his disciples, and when he reached a place, he ordered them to sit down; It was morning, and he, moving away from his disciples as far as he could throw a stone, prayed to the Lord. Then, at his request, his disciples dug a cruciform tomb; and he commanded Prochorus to go to Jerusalem, and there he remained until his death. And after teaching the disciples and kissing them, the holy apostle said: Take the earth, my mother, and cover me with it. - And the disciples kissed him and covered him to the knees; and when he kissed him again, he covered him to the throat, and put a blanket over his face; and kissing him again, she covered him completely with great weeping. When the brothers in the city heard about it, they came and dug up the grave, but found nothing, and wept very much; then, after praying, they returned to the city. Every year, on the eighth day of the month of May, he poured out of his grave some small dust, fragrant and healing, and with the prayers of the holy apostle John he gave healing to the sick, in the part of God, in the Trinity glorified through all ages. Amen
