Saint Petka was born in Rome, came from a Christian family and lived in the second century after Christ. After the death of her parents, she distributed the property to the poor and became a monk.
Having become a monk, she preached the forbidden faith of Christ and was therefore accused of Emperor Antoninus Pius. Having healed the emperor himself, who was baptized, she continued to be a missionary in other parts.
Because of the preaching of the Christian faith, she was imprisoned, severely tortured and eventually cut with a sword, by order of Prince Tarasius around the year 140.
Her relics were later transferred to Constantinople.
The feast of Petka Trnova is one of the immovable ones, it is celebrated every year on August 8 according to the Gregorian calendar or on July 26 according to the Julian calendar.
That day is highly respected by the Serbian people, although it is not a "command holiday" / red letter /. In some places, votive and monastic celebrations are celebrated.
The feast of the Venerable Martyr Paraskeva, popularly known as Petka Trnova, marks the end of a small summer "cycle of women's holidays", to which both Ognjen and Blaga Marija belong.
Then all the hard work in the field and in the house is avoided.
Many confuse St. Petka Trnova, who was a Roman and is celebrated in August, with St. Petka, who was Greek and is celebrated in October, not knowing that there are more saints with this name in the calendar.
Beautiful church above Zvornik. From here there is a view of the whole city and its surroundings.
Nice church!
Church in a great location.
