Serbs settled in this municipality after the fall of the Roman Empire. The medieval town of Dubica (ca. 930), which occupied the area of the village of Draksenic, Medjedja, Demirovac, with its center in the present-day village of Donja Gradina, developed until 1242, when it was destroyed by Batu-Khan-led Mongols. The municipality also houses the Monastery of Moštanica, which some historians place in the 8th and others in the 10th century. In the monastery of Moštanica was buried Petar Popović Pecija, the leader of the Serbian uprising in the area of Knešpolje. On the intersection of the municipalities of Kozarska Dubica, Prijedor and Novi Grad, there are also medieval monasteries of Sv. St. George in the Marines. The municipality fell under Turkish rule in 1538. Today's Dubica center has been built by Serbian traders and Serbian artisans since 1852. This municipality, during its entire history of history, suffered the most during the Second World War, when it was occupied by the NDH, and on its territory was part of the system of the Ustasha concentration camps Jasenovac, Donja Gradina Camp. In the Donja Gradina camp, on an area of 116 hectares, the Ustashas have killed 360,000 people, and so far, 105 large-sized mass graves have been discovered. Today, in this area of Kozarska Dubica municipality there is a memorial area of Donja Gradina. During the war during the breakup of Yugoslavia on September 18 and 19, 1995, the Kozarska Dubica municipality was attacked by the Croatian army. This attack was defended by the Republika Srpska Army.
