After the establishment of independent and sovereign Bangladesh through the great war of liberation on 16 December 1971, all the banks located in the territory of Bangladesh were brought under nationalization. In this context, the Bank was established as a State Commercial Bank by the Ordinance dated March 26, 1972 (Bangladesh Banks Nationalization Order 1972 PO No. 28) Ordinance with branches of former Habib Bank Limited and former Commerce Bank Limited in Bangladesh territory and all liabilities and assets. Agrani Bank started with an authorized capital of Tk 5 crore and a paid up capital of Tk 1 crore. It later became a public limited company on May 17, 2006.
