Amazing to see the influence of the Portuguese in a city founded by the French in 1612. Very interesting but surprising that the buildings are in such bad shape around the area despite being UNEDCO heritage.
This place has been totally renewed in 1999. I recommend a short visit to this place that actually contains a small museum with the international gifts received by the former Brazilian President José Sarney. He was from Maranhão state. The library with rare books is unfortunately not open to visitors.
