Taberna do Darwin

Magic place in a beautiful spot, amazing food in a genuine atmosphere, brilliant accommodation in the very well equipped and maintained timber cottages. Don't miss the Darwin track which leaves from the place. We had a wonderful stay in this amazing little paradise and enjoyed the funny stories and the bon viant spirit of its owner. He also took us to interesting excursions to the markets, the beaches, the football stadium and the bohemian nightlife of Lapa. We definitely can recommend this place and it will be our base for sure the day we will come back to Rio de Janeiro.

Daily fresh menu. Very attentive staff. Chef is all up in your business...in the best way!! You feel like you're in his home in the jungle.

Charles Darwin passed through here in 1832, hence the name, but his lunch probably wasn't as good as ours! The setting is a rustic country house, with wooden decks, a shady tropical garden and a hammock. It's set on a hillside overlooking a quiet valley and forested hills. The food includes a delicious (and healthy) vegan buffet, with homemade chutneys and sauces on the side, plus a large clay pot of black beans to help yourself to. Also on the menu are contemporary-style main courses and scrumptious desserts. Currently open for lunch (weekends only) a reservation is almost certainly required to guarantee a place at one of the few tables. It's a dirt track to get there; ask a local for directions if you get lost.
