The content of the museum is cool. It's a bit cramped in the main part, and then the rest of it is spread out a lot over all of the floors and most of the hallways. It was difficult to get in because you have to ring them for the door to unlock, like an apartment or office building. It's a nice history lesson and you get a private tour of the main part because no one else is there. It is free, but I would definitely leave a donation.
We visited the museum during the Journées de la Culture. It was amazing :) The museum is rather small, but there are a lot of interesting things inside of it regarding the music history. I was fascinated by the stories your guides know :) A very interesting place.
I found a really interesting exhibit of 1960s record players designed and made in Montreal. Interesting format for a museum, just one room, from what I understand it's a passion project of about 50 collectors who pool their materials. A volunteer was there and gave an excellent explanation of the exhibit; without her guidance I would not have found it nearly as interesting because there was very little explanatory text in the exhibition. I was told a larger exhibition would be opening in September and I will definitely go back. Took one star off only because it was confusing to find the entrance and to find the vitrines installed throughout the hallways of the factory building. I think the wayfinding could definitely be made a more important priority.
We got a detailed tour including looks into the behind-the-scenes projects in the works. All very exciting. Cool collection with great potential for future growth
It is an absolute gem of Montreal! Super interesting collection for anyone who is interested in retro tech, audio tech, record players, TVs or the history of Canadian industry.
Make sure you call ahead your visit as they may not always be there (it is a volunteer-run museum).
