Chinese Cemetery

The sign has lots of information, worth reading. The graveyard itself is rather empty, however, there may be more down the path. Unfortunately, I did not get to venture all the way down this path, but next time I shall definitely do so. The location is easy to get to. Calming place.

This "historically important" Cemetery was founded a year before Cumberland was "recognized" as a community! It is made up of two Cemeteries-- one for the Japanese and the other for the Chinese communities. Leading up to the development of the lovely/interesting town of Cumberland was the development of mining and logging companies... which found it essential to hire "hard/productive workers"... hence the founding of these two communities... both of which have well defined rituals relating to deaths. The cemeteries are well kept, very different in character... and interesting! [NOTE: in Cumberland, on the main street, there is an excellent "Chinese Canadian (with a Jamaican twist) restaurant]. This place has a lot of history! If you're here, do read their signs and you'll get to learn a lot about the history of this place! The signs on the graves are mostly in Mandarin!
