If l could rate less than one star, l would. l have been preparing my income tax return for over 35 years but with the start of a new career with different tax considerations l decided to hire a professional to avoid making an error. For the past two years, two different accountants at Schwabe & Co. have prepared my personal income tax return incorrectly. Both accountants made the same reporting error. Each year l wondered if an error had been made and asked for the return to be rechecked. Both times l was assured that the return was prepared correctly. Last year l paid in for the first time in 35 years, although the sum was not significant. This year, Brandon said he worked to avoid me paying in several thousands more in taxes. He said l was grossly underpaying into taxes and advised that l ask my employer to withhold several hundred more dollars a month to avoid possibly paying in thousands more next year, should l not have the same deductions as l did this year. I decided to spend one Friday evening plugging the numbers into a tax program and l found the error. When l brought it to Brandon’s attention, he reviewed it and agreed that he had indeed, made an error. The error was significant. Last year when l paid in...turns out l was owed over $2000. This year, instead of getting $200 back, l was entitled to over $12,000. Brandon apologized but l can’t help feeling that if l hadn’t figured it out the error would have not been identified. I asked for a discount on his $650 fee but was told “that’s not going to happen”. I paid in full. Obviously l will not go back. I will be reporting this matter to CPA Alberta.
