Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site

Great for a family outing even during pandemic restrictions.

I have been to Atlas 3 times, and my most recent trip took the all inclusive tour. So remarkable to walk the steps of these miners, from the office, to the eerie shower room to up and inside the mine. I look forward to going back again. I highly recommend.

If you are in Drumheller, this place is well worth a visit. We have been two or three times with our children, and they love it. We have taken the tour of the coal tipple and had a ride in the mine cars. There is also lots to see by walking around the site, with artefacts, equipment and displays that provide a glimpse into the past.

With the recently updated panels, lots of historical artifacts, and helpful staff, I thought this was a bit of a gem hidden amongst the other prevalent local attractions. I wish we could have gone into the mine (thanks, Covid) but there was still plenty to see and learn on our self-guided tour. Great historical site!

Fun place to explore and learn. The self guided tour leads participants through the tipple, many structures and vehicles, and a large array of mining machinery. The signage is informative, often with engaging narratives and personal tales from generations past. Things to keep in mind: -book in advance from a place with good internet/data coverage. Trying to do so from the parking lot will be troublesome for most. -little shelter from sun or rain. -book ahead for guided and more in depth tours. -gift shop is online during COVID.
