Lougheed Town Centre station is a major interchange station on the Expo and Millennium Lines. Unlike most branching stations, this one has three platforms, not two! The platform layout has been changed once since the opening of the Evergreen Extension to the Millennium Line. This was done for the purpose of removing left-hand track running between Lougheed and Burquitlam. But although it makes the trains faster by switching tracks less, in my opinion, it makes the platform layout worse. PROBLEM ONE In my opinion, it would be better to use separate platforms to differentiate the eastbound trains, as that is the splitting point for the two branches. Using separate platforms for the westbound trains, like the current layout, can get confusing for eastbound travellers because they have to pay attention to the electronic destination display. On westbound trains from Lougheed, you can just get on any westbound train, and change trains if it terminates at Production Way. PROBLEM TWO The new platform layout can seem unorthodox to some. There is now no point in waiting on platform 2, because any train that comes will just terminate at the next station, Production Way. And if you *are* riding just one stop to Production Way, it’s even worse, because you then have to figure out whether the next train will come on platform 2 or platform 3. The outdoor arrival display does not show platform 3 times, only times for platforms 1 & 2. Other than that, the station is pretty good! The station is fully accessible from all entrances, with elevators to each platform. Remember that the trains only take up half of the platform on the Millennium Line. Don’t stand near the end of the platform. FINAL RATING: 6/10
