Baroque masterpiece of Santini.

Obviously little known Žďárská landmark. The cemetery, like the Pilgrimage Church of St. John of Nepomuk, was built on the basis of Santini's project, its floor plan is to resemble a skull. An interesting legend about the undead administrator Ulrich is attached to it. Admission is voluntary.

The lower cemetery was founded in 1709 at the instigation of the abbot of the Žďár monastery, Václav Vejmluva, who was expecting a plague epidemic. However, it avoided Žďár and the cemetery, which originally had only three chapels (referring to the symbolism of the Holy Trinity) began to bury later. The building was designed by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel as the first work here. In the middle of the 18th century the cemetery was no longer sufficient and under the abbot Leopold Hennet it was extended by the fourth chapel. Its ground plan thus acquired a contemporary shape that resembles a skull. In the middle of the complex there is a statue of the Last Judge Angel with a trombone by the sculptor Gregory Theny, a pupil of the famous sculptor Matyáš Bernard Braun, who worked in Žďár from 1729 to 1738. A great pity it was not possible to look inside! The lower cemetery was founded in 1709 at the instigation of the abbot of Žďár monastery, Václav Vejmluva, who was expecting a plague epidemic. Lovingly received and well looked after with free entry. There was a slide in German to explain it. Definitely worth a visit.

A nice example of Santini's architecture with an explanation of a skillful guide.
