Baroque chapel of St. Barbory is in a Romanesque round tower in the area of the former Olomouc castle. So many guides. But. The chapel is part of a tour of the Archdiocesan Museum, at the very end of this tour. And now choose. You will admire the church jewels, the golden chariot, many rare paintings and sculptures. Many visitors come to the chapel of St. Barbara hungry, thirsty, their feet hurt. So either we don't go to the chapel at all, or we run it, just to be told.
And it's a shame.
The history of the chapel of St. Barbara dates back to the 12th century, when it was built in the form of a Romanesque residential tower. In the early 13th century, it was included in the New Gradeka - the residence of the Margrave.
At the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries a spiral staircase was attached to the tower, and new windows were made on the northern and southern sides. Since 1535 the chapel of St. Barbara has become part of the Chapter. In the middle of the 18th century the tower was divided into three floors, while the third floor housed a private prelate chapel of St. Barbara.
To this day, the chapel has been preserved in a slightly modified form. Initially, the tower had a conical roof, which, with the beginning of the Baroque era, was replaced by a dome with a lantern. The top of this dome is decorated with a gilded statue of St. Barbara.
At present, the chapel of the cathedral is undergoing restoration work, so the entrance to them is temporarily limited. However, it did not upset me in the least, as there were many sculptural compositions and art-objects on the square in front of the cathedral, which caused no less admiration.
Originally a tower - bergfrit of Přemyslid Castle, its origins date back to the 11th century. The upper part was in the 18th century. adapted to the chapel. The Romanesque foundations of the tower and the castle are now accessible during a tour of the Archdiocesan Museum.
The historical base of the tower can be seen in the Archdiocese Museum. It was then rebuilt into a chapel.
