As for medieval sacral architecture, this building is a real jewel of Klatovy! The impressive Archdeacon Church began to be built shortly after the foundation of the city, at the end of the 13th century. At that time it was the only whole stone building inside the city. It was repaired several times and so only a few stone fragments have been preserved from the original building. The main nave with a vault in the late Gothic style comes from the years 1550-60 from the workshop of the Kadan builder Antonín Salnellyn. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Klatovy is an archdeacon church, which probably started to be built at the end of the 13th century. The church is an important pilgrimage site. The image of the Virgin Mary on the main altar is a copy of a miraculous image from a church in Re, Italy. It was brought to Klatovy as its only heritage by an Italian craftsman who settled there. When he prayed before the painting in the greatest need of his life on July 8, 1685, the painting began to shed blood on the head of the Mother of God, as did the original in Re in 1494.
