This local museum is a surprise gem. Exhibits are well separated into groups such as The Arts, Sciences, etc. and these groups into subgroups. Very low entry fee for what you get. Displays are beautifully put together. The only minus for me is that although it is multilingual, English isn't included. Upon entry you are presented with a beautiful guide book which has many details of the exhibits. This book is not for sale and must be turned in as you leave. I would have been very happy to purchase a copy. They do have a gift shop but very little is available in English. I hope this is just a development issue since even guide posts in the city center are in Czech and English, something you don't see even in Prague.

The castle in the royal town of Písek was founded by Přemysl Otakar II. in 1254, the Písek-Zvíkov construction smelter took part in its construction, in 1306 the castle was completed in the early Gothic style. In the years 1352-1363, Emperor Charles IV often stayed at the Písek Castle. The sons of the last mortgage lord Hynek Pluh of Rabštejn sold the castle to the town of Písek in 1509. After the great fire of 1532, a large part of the town, including the castle, was severely damaged and it is listed as desolate in 1547, another decline occurred during the Thirty Years' War, when it was further plundered. The castle gradually declined and its parts were rebuilt into buildings for another purpose, a barracks or a malt house were built here, in the 18th century a baroque town hall was built. The last preserved part of the castle is the former royal palace with a knight's hall - today part of the Prácheň Museum, where, among other things, there is a unique exhibition of gold mining.
