Very interesting to stand in a volcanic crater, even if it is a bit small. The signage is good.

Interesting place

An interesting place for those interested in geology, but also for people with a certain penchant for adventure. In Neualbenreuth, from the market square, you first follow Turmstrasse out of town and after about 300m turn left into Zollstrasse, which leads uphill to the exit of the town. Finally, between fields you come to the hiking crossing from Germany to the Czech Republic. On foot you pass a refuge and after about 50 m a ravine leads through a forest to the youngest volcano in the area, the Eisenbühl, about 300 m away. The ash cone, which is around 200 million years old, experienced different epochs in which black slag and other layers were deposited. When you arrive at your destination, you are in a grassy area that is surrounded, especially towards the north, by up to 10m high slag heaps. It is a bit strange to stand in a place where once hot rock and poisonous gases came out of the ground. Corresponding boulders are scattered along the path and in the nearby bushes without showing any signs of weathering, as if they had only been thrown there yesterday.
