There are thousands of cafes in Prague, but there are very few that are genuinely special, different, unique. I’m a frequenter of cafes and bars, and when a special one is on my list I’m a dedicated patron. What’s special about Manana are its managers, Filip Kadner and his charming wife Lucie, with their English Springer spaniel Tonda often acting as maître d’, along with the new addition to the family, Zofie, another Springer spaniel. Filip has a genuine passion for all things related to food and drink, and there isn’t one single item on the café’s ever adventurous menu which isn’t of the highest quality. Everything is fresh and delicious. My particular favourite dish is the pancakes with mozzarella and sun-dried tomato which, for me, do more than fill a hungry hole, they pack it with mouthfuls of simple but exquisite taste. And as for the desserts….the cucumber ice-cream knocks most of the usual zmrzlina you find in Prague into the shade. Though there’s always something equally fresh and beguiling as a puff of summer cloud in a parched landscape hovering temptingly under glass on the counter. I was first lured into Manana by the smell of the coffee. I’m one of those coffee addicts who’ve drunk the brown-stuff unthinkingly for years, washing down any old slop to get that ‘caffeine hit.’ But Filip’s passion for what he does really surfaces in the coffee. Every time I go in there’s a new bean available from some remote part of the planet, its aroma alone – Filip is always eager to let you have a sniff of the latest purchase – as subtle and powerful as any wine. Indeed, Filip’s coffee is so good I can dispense with the alcohol completely, well, almost. . Which brings me conveniently to their divine beer. Kounický ležák comes from a small family brewery where they brew more for the pleasure than profit, preferring to let the taste of this delicious pivo with its cool foamy white head do its own marketing. It comes in both light and dark forms, though the light is my favourite. India Pale Ale is also available, and excellent, particularly as an appetizer. All the wines and spirits are selected with obsessive care by Filip and his wife, who don’t just flick through a supplier’s catalogue, they research, they taste, they ask their customers what they think. Filip was particularly anxious to make sure they stocked the very best whiskies and malt whiskies, and this reviewer was more than happy to act as a guinea pig. I could go on singing the praises of this inimitable, warm and welcoming café until the cows come home to be turned into burgers, but I wont. Just thinking about Manana makes my mouth water and my taste buds open like sunflowers….
