Beautiful small church in a quiet location

We came across this beautiful church by accident. It is “hidden” on a small hill close to Vysehrad. Bell tower stands near to the church. Place with interesting history.

Early Baroque Church of St. Pankrác stands in a smaller park, which was a former cemetery, which was abolished in 1866. It is one of the oldest monuments of the City District of Prague 4 and seeing it surrounded by all modern buildings is a really special feeling. The original building contains a Romanesque rotunda from the 12th century and stands on the foundations of a Gothic church, which was destroyed by the Swedes at the end of the Thirty Years' War in 1648. Even during other war events. The cannonball is still visible in the masonry. It was rebuilt into its present form by the Jesuits at the end of the 17th century, a century later it also served as a gunpowder depot. Near the church there is a baroque bell tower less than 20 meters high. It is a four-sided tower-shaped building, in the northern wall of which there is a cartouche with an illegible inscription. It is multi-storey, with semicircular windows, topped by a helical roof, a lantern and a poppy. In connection with the construction of the metro line C, its foundations were strengthened. Directly below it and the church, its tunnels lead to a depth of fifteen meters. In the area between the church and the bell tower stands a statue of St. Jan Nepomucký. Early baroque church of st. In the park, there are plenty of benches in the shade and in the sun, and almost always you can find them. There is also a drinking place to fill the water or a dog
