Church of St Katherine of Alexandria

The Orthodox Church of St. Great Catherine is originally a Gothic church, founded by Charles IV. in 1355 as part of the Augustinian Monastery. Its present appearance dates back to the period after the reconstruction in 1741, when only the slender tower in the facade has been preserved from the originally Gothic temple. In 1420 the monastery was burnt down by the Hussites, but the church continued to function, only with a break between 1737–1741, when it was rebuilt in High Baroque form. In 1784 the whole monastery was abolished by Joseph II. and transformed into a military educational institute, which was replaced by the institute for the insane in 1822. The church was consecrated again in 1841 and worship was held here until 1950, when it was handed over to the municipal museum. Since January 2010 its liturgical function has been restored. Pravoslavný chrám svaté velikomučednice Kateřiny je původně gotický kostel, který byl založen Karlem IV. v roce 1355 jako součást kláštera augustiniánek. Dnešní podoba kostela pochází z doby po přestavbě roku 1741, z původně gotického chrámu se dochovala jen štíhlá věž v průčelí. V roce 1420 byl klášter vypálen husity, kostel však dál fungoval, pouze s přestávkou mezi lety 1737–1741, kdy byl přestavěn ve vrcholném baroku. Už v roce 1784 byl však celý klášter zrušen Josefem II. a proměněn ve vojenský výchovný ústav, který v roce 1822 vystřídal ústav pro choromyslné. V roce 1841 byl kostel znovu vysvěcen a bohoslužby se zde konaly až do roku 1950, kdy byl předán do užívání městskému muzeu. Od ledna 2010 tu byl opět obnoven liturgický provoz.
