Přírodní památka Letiště Milotice

On the airport area there is a stable population of critically endangered European ground squirrel, numbering 200 to 300 individuals. It represents one of the largest colonies in the South Moravian Region. A European ground squirrel rescue program is being implemented in the Czech Republic. The public national airport for small aircraft was established here in 1951. The basic maintenance of the airport's grass area consists of regular mowing three times a year. This maintains a permanently low grassland as an essential limiting factor for the maintenance of the vital ground squirrel population.
