Picturesque place in the alley above Hořice from which breathes history. Too bad we could only see it through a locked gate. According to the rusted mansion and tall grass, nobody seems to come here very much. But I must commend the city. The information board familiarized us well with the troubled fates of the Jewish inhabitants of the city.
For the first time, Jews are reminiscent of Hořice in the first half of the 16th century and their communities are expanding in the following centuries. The village flourished in the middle of the 19th century, when 400 Jews lived in the town, the village had its synagogue, school, cemetery, rabbi and funeral brotherhood. The evidence of the once numerous Jewish settlement is the Baroque synagogue from the 1870s (the first wooden synagogue was built half a century earlier) in the Factory Street, which today serves as the prayer hall of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. The old Jewish cemetery with valuable historical tombstones, probably founded in the second half of the 17th century, is situated in the northern part of the city. The new Jewish cemetery, founded in 1897 in the neighborhood of the new Gothard cemetery, was destroyed in the 1960s, leaving only the original Jewish mourning ceremonial hall (Vilem Stastny, 1900), serving today's civil funerals. It is worth mentioning the original residential villas of Jewish builders (Hirsch, Feuerstein, Goldschmidt), boasting remarkable architecture. However, their current status is not good.
The Old Jewish Cemetery in Škrétova Street is not freely accessible, but those interested in the tour can borrow the keys at the Municipal Museum. It is located on Škréta Street, which leads from the square. You can get there on the red tourist trail towards the Masaryk Tower of Independence.
Definitely worth seeing, but it's good to be in complete peace. The place deserves it. Definitely recommend to all lovers of mysterious places. its atmosphere is unrepeatable.
This beautiful monument is reminiscent of the Jewish community living here. It was first mentioned in 1748, but it was probably founded a century earlier. Next to the graveyard stood a house for caretakers and a morgue. The cemetery was buried until 1897, then the new cemetery at St.Gothard. If you are interested in a tour, the key can be borrowed from the City Information Center. A visit is worth it.
A picturesque Jewish cemetery above the town of Hořice. Beautiful ancient tombstones, mysterious nooks. Keys from the cemetery to be borrowed in the Hořice information center on the square. The cemetery is not freely accessible.
Monument!
