The birth of the Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Žleby dates back to 1540. At that time, the owner of the local manor Kuneš Bohdanecký of Hodkov had a local church built and built a bell tower on the opposite hill on the other side of the Doubrava River. For the belfry he had procured two bells, Mark and Mary, apparently of a Clown origin. Both are still on the belfry.
The parish seat was transferred to Žleby so that the local settlers did not have to go to the church to neighboring Markovice. The church at that time was small and low, about half of the present. Over time, it did not suit its size to meet the needs of people to attend worship. In 1702 it is mentioned as a rundown, desolate and long-time uncorrected. In order to avoid its abolition, in 1714 it was costly restored, extended to width and height, oratorio and sacristy added. The church received a decorative tower and was embellished with a cross. All this at the expense of the Lord of Kaiserstein.
When his only daughter, Catherine, inherited the estate, it restored the statue of Our Lady in the square in 1741. She also built a missionary cross in 1749 in front of a church that has not been preserved.
After 1775, Adam of Auersperg had a costly tomb chapel built for himself and his wife Vilemina on the north side of the church. Further repairs followed in 1783 and 1875. A partially new facility was acquired in 1896.
The interior of the church has nice frescoes on the walls and ceiling. Several white marble tombstones are set in the wall inside the church. Due to the time, the inscriptions of that time cannot be completely deciphered. Also in front of the main altar are tombstones that are so beaten, that it is not possible to read the font on them and only the preserved characters can estimate the people who rest here.
In the last century it was repaired and painted several times. New crystal chandeliers were purchased. In 1960, the roof was repaired and a new tile covering was installed.
Since the church's location on the left bank of the Doubrava River has suffered many great floods in the past.
In 1734, the water from the flooded Doubrava entered the Church of the Lord, where benches and other facilities floated. The water in the church, according to historical sources, reached 11 cubits high.
Also later in 1804 the water flooded the neighboring cemetery and demolished the enclosure wall. In the church, the floor collapsed in several places.
The evening of 29 to 30 July in 1897 after a three-day constant rain, Žleby had a great flood. The water entered the church again and reached the second level of the main altar.
May 23, 1908, probably the biggest disaster. Water went up to the church above the altar and the benches, confessional and cabinets swam freely around the church.
After the completion of the dam in Paris, the Doubrava water did not threaten the local church.
The original Renaissance church from 1540 was rebuilt in the 18th century, rebuilt repeatedly after the floods of 1783, 1875 and even in the 20th century. Around the cemetery there is a beautiful neo-Renaissance chapel of the Auersperks family from 1822.
