Mojžíš

The work of František Bílek depicts a kneeling Moses who led the Israeli people out of Egyptian captivity, as Adam writes on a "A" scroll. Bílek originally wanted to realize the cycle The Path, which was supposed to capture a kind of human epic in thirty-eight parables. At the beginning of the journey was Meteor (we were a hot meteor), Adam and Eve, but also exotic Rama, Krishna and other biblical prophets. But apart from the lithographs of the planned sculptures, there was only one statue - Moses. The artist originally intended to place Moses in the front garden of his villa in Hradčany. However, when in 1915 he completed the sculptural group of Comenius saying goodbye to his homeland, and arguing with the Prague municipality where to place it, it took no end, in 1926 the embarrassed Master of Sculpture of Comenius built the considered place for Moses. The statue of Moses was eventually purchased by the Ministry of Education, poured into bronze and donated to the capital city of Prague with the condition that it be placed in a public space. A mixed commission established by the municipality decided that the statue would stand in this park. In 1940 the statue was removed and melted during the occupation. Fortunately, the widow of František Bílek saved an original plaster model throughout the war, thanks to which the statue was again cast and placed in its place again in 1947.
