The Jewish page of the history of Mikulov (Nikolsburg) began in the 15th century, when Jews were persecuted and deported first from Vienna and Lower Austria, then from Moravia. Refugees settled under the protection of the princes of Liechtenstein along the Austrian border. Nicholsburg eventually became an important Jewish cultural center. At different times, the rabbis were Yehuda Leo ben Bezalel (later became Rabbi of Prague, the creator of the Golem), Shmelka Horowitz, Mordechai Benet and Shimshon Raphael Hirsch. By the middle of the XIX century, there were more than 3 thousand Jews, 12 synagogues, educational institutions and the chief rabbi of Moravia (since the XVI century). In 1848 the Jews were given the right to live freely in Austria and the community began to decrease. Has ceased to exist during the Holocaust. Some objects of Jewish history in Mikulov have been preserved and are part of the Museum of the Jewish community. In the photo there is a synagogue called the Old or the Upper. It was laid in 1550, after the fire of 1719 the reconstruction gave it the present appearance. Small changes in the details were made in the XIX century. It was opened after a large-scale reconstruction in the early 90s of the last century.

Beautiful decoration and surprisingly few tourists in Mikulov, so you can see everything better.
