Who knows that the saint, whose name the community bears, was a German merchant who lived in the 13th century. He gave all of his possessions to the poor and entered a monastery in Novgorod. Its name is borne by the congregation in Hamburg still has a sister church. It is located in an outbuilding of the Katharinenkirche, which belonged to a Franciscan monastery. The town once gave the monastery a plot of land on Glockengießerstrasse.
