The church, which was designed by the architect Hanns Schönecker in 1968/69, is a typical modern church building with lots of exposed concrete. The previous neo-Romanesque Antoniuskurche from 1899-1900, which was in a different location in Lützel, fell victim to the devastating bomb attacks. In the meantime, the Maria-Hilf pilgrimage church and another emergency church served as temporary solutions.
