Limited opening hours during weekend. I’m expecting more tourist during weekend. Maybe I’m wrong. I would prefer more languages than just German on tourist info webpages.

Unfortunately not open on weekends, but the main brochures also available outside, nicely decorated

The cross-country skiing Eldorado Bavarian Forest with its several 100 kilometers of groomed trails begins to fade. That's how my impression was in January 2019, after visiting the south-eastern section from Grosser Arber via Mauth / Finsterau to Haidel / Grainet to Ski-LL almost every year since 2003. Examples: Fri 25.2.19, Kasberg round, not freshly groomed Sat, 26.2.19, Rosenau - Altschönau, approx. 18 km, track snowed, track device only finished its job at 3 pm, which was relatively meaningless at that time 2 hours before dusk Mo., 28.2., Sonnenloipe near Kreuzberg at the cross-country ski center Freyung is now only halfway through its former length. Mo., 28.2., Entire track system between the cross-country ski center Freyung near Kreuzberg and Mauth, approx. 18 km, snowy, unspured until the afternoon. Wednesday, January 30th, bright blue sky, fresh powder snow, trail at Annathal snow-covered, without any trace as well as complete Epiphany trail between Mauth and Finsterau unspiked, as on request, the competent driver of the track device ill. In the future, the track Lichteneck-Elmberg will only be groomed in the first half. The racy descents of the second half have become history. .... Conclusion: The once perfect care condition of the Bayerwald ski trails begins to become history. It can be assumed that the snow conditions, which became noticeably worse over the years in conjunction with economic considerations, have led to the reduction of the care capacities for the trail network which is so far unique in Central Europe, starting with the year 2019. Only where in higher altitudes with better snow safety in the past were real "highlights" of cross-country skiing, to recognize the money-hungry parking machines, will continue to maintain a perfectly maintained network of trails. The parking fees are, however, in view of the considerable financial effort for the trail maintenance only a small thank you to the winter sports enthusiasts for the wonderful cross-country skiing delights that the Bavarian Forest still holds. However, you should now reorientate where you can hope for it. The local tourist offices are currently waiting for the newly printed trail plans, which they already have for November 2018! were promised. Still relatively snow-sure and usually perfectly groomed, the ingenious trail system in the most impressive winter landscape on the Great Arber, starting from the cross-country center Bretterschachten with adjacent Auerhahn-high trail, the cross-country center Finsterau and finally the track system at Grainet on Haidel. All areas with an altitude of just over 1,000 meters. Nevertheless, the Bavarian Forest remains the absolute Central European dream area for cross-country skiing: Numerous trails with an unprecedented total length, often networked with each other, so that cross-country hiking is possible, offer different requirements from easy to difficult with constantly changing views. The journey to the Alps for cross-country skiing was saved in 2003 after my first acquaintance with the Bayerwald trails in 2003. And despite everything that can be observed again, I can only say: "Ski-Langlaufurlaub" in the Bavarian Forest is still a great experience, .... given time flexibility provided.
