The Ottilien Chapel is a beautiful, now largely unnoticed gem in the 'historic heart' of Welling. As a former place of pilgrimage, especially for those suffering from eyesight (whose patron saint is St. Ottilie), it has now largely been forgotten and threatened to fall into decay. Many years ago the chapel and the surrounding area were extensively restored; Despite the loving care of individual committed citizens, you can gradually see traces of the 'ravages of time' gnawing at the building (for example, the plaster and paint from the altar, which is essentially covered with clay and straw, are peeling off). This makes it all the more worthwhile to stop at this small chapel - the chapel is usually open during the day, and not just in times of the corona pandemic. Particularly noteworthy are the figures of St. Ottilie (on a plinth to the left of the altar), St. Aloysius (on a plinth to the right of the altar), as well as a (I think) beautiful Mater Dolorosa on the wooden windowsill. A visual highlight for me is the sky painted light blue and decorated with gold stars; however, I'm not sure if this corresponds to the historical origin ... For most of the decades of the 20th century the sky was painted white. Nevertheless, the blue sky does not miss its calming, picturesque effect and invites you to let God be 'a good man' for a few moments ...
