Otto Krafft Square
at Bärenbrunnen received its name around 1922 in memory of the merits of the Stadtbaurats. Otto Krafft, born in Wetzlar in 1879, took up his duties at the city of Hamm in 1906 as a city construction inspector. Already on 1 January 1907 he was appointed city councilor. In 1916 he died after a long illness in Zurich. In his ten-year tenure, he created with the ring systems and the new traffic routes a convenient connection between the old town and the adjacent neighborhoods. Lord Mayor Richard Matthaei and Otto Krafft initiated a phase of modern urban development with the laying of the Ahse, the canal construction, the construction of the Hammer Harbor. In memory of his great merits, the memorial stone from Ruhr Sandstone, created by the sculptor Franz Breitholz, was inaugurated on September 11, 1938.
According to the competition design of the first winners of 1912 had the strictly geometrically designed place in the axis to the bear well a large jewelry pond with water lilies. The planned outskirts with district court and district administration could not be implemented. The new district court building was instead built in 1928 along with the new correctional facility on the corner Bismarckstraße / Borbergstraße. The construction of a district office was unnecessary. The eastern edge of the square remained undeveloped. This allows an unrestricted view of today's Higher Regional Court. South of the Otto-Krafft-Platz a villa development was planned. In 1924 the "Villa Kropp" was built as the first building. In 1929, the miners' settlement Hamm-Hövel built their administration building. The two buildings Otto-Krafft-Platz 21 and 22 have been listed since 2006. The lily pond, which also served as a fire extinguishing pond, was filled in after the removal of a dud in 1950. The place received additional diagonal ways. The chestnuts, which were planted at the beginning, have reached an impressive size today and now serve as shade for the new benches
Has developed very nicely
Very nice place to stay
Quite a central place to relax or meet people; at the OLG Hamm
Otto Kraft Platz is beautifully designed and can be considered as a successful reconstruction. Without a doubt a "pearl" of the "old residence town Hamm of the county mark".
