Detachment (from the French détachement) commonly designates the troop fraction, more or less numerous, that eventually separates itself from the main nucleus of forces to which it belongs, to fulfill a special mission of secondary order at such distance from it, which makes it impossible, usually, to take immediate part in the fighting he maintains. Some call war of detachments to the one that takes place in areas far from the main theater of operations, and it does not propose more than secondary objectives for which the use of relatively small columns is required. The mission of protecting the lines of communications, of observing, blocking or besieging strongholds, of chasing games and guerrillas, and many others that usually increase as the struggle continues, are as many objectives of this kind of operations.
