Ingenio Boca de Nigua

[ESPAÑOL más abajo] The ruins of Boca de Nigua Sugar Mill are a historic site located in the San Gregorio de Nigua Community, San Cristóbal Province. This sugar mill was one of the most important ones back in year 1600, when the sugar industry took off in the island. It was built in a colonial style in the XVI Century and belonged to a Spanish marquise. It’s also an important landmark of the anti-slavery struggle; On October 30, 1796, the most important rebellion of black slaves against their Spanish oppressors took place in this place. Nowadays it’s a very well cared and clean ruins but its lack of security in the surroundings should be taken in note. If you try plan to visit, you better go in a very large group or hire some security. [ESPAÑOL] Las ruinas del ingenio Boca de Nigua es un lugar histórico ubicado en la comunidad San Gregorio de Nigua, provincia San Cristóbal. Este ingenio azucarero fue uno de los más importantes para el despegue y consolidación de la industria azucarera en el lado oeste de La Hispaniola. Fue construido en el Siglo XVI. También es un símbolo importante en la lucha antiesclavista, fue precisamente en este lugar donde se llevó a cabo la gran más importante y trascendental rebelión de esclavos negros en contra de sus opresores españoles. Hoy en día, las ruinas históricas son un atractivo histórico bien conservado y cuidado. Sin embargo, la falta de seguridad en la instalación y en sus alrededores, convierten el antiguo ingenio en un lugar donde las personas podrían ser susceptibles al robo. Deben tomar esto en cuenta al momento de visitarlo, para que tomen las medidas de lugar o vayan en compañía de personas que les garanticen la seguridad.
