The head of the Catholic Church is the bishop of Rome, the Pope, considered the successor of the apostle Peter, who according to Catholic tradition was the first pope. The current pope, number 266 in the history of the Church, is Francis. The papal headquarters, known as the Holy See, occupies a preeminent place among the other episcopal seats and constitutes the central government of the Church, 11 for whom it acts and speaks, and is recognized internationally as a sovereign entity. Where the bishop is the community, as well as where Christ is Jesus is the Catholic Church.
