Cascada Machay

A fun hike!

This trail is not too difficult as we had a 5 & 7 year old with us and they made it through to the waterfall and back fine. There are some man-made steps and paths as descend towards the waterfall and river, though it can get slippery when wet. A leisurely hike will take about 15-20 minutes to reach the waterfall, which will be well worth it. The refreshing mist from the waterfall is a breathe of welcome as you reach the base. And if the sun is shining, a rainbow will be a great backdrop for many pictures/videos. Go further down to the river to dip in the cooling water coming down from the waterfall. Just be mindful of the strong current and slippery surface, and you will have a relaxing time. There is also a hanging bridge beside the waterfall that lead you onto another trail. It will bring you further into the forest along the river. Along the way, you will see a sign for side trail that gets you down to the river down stream. There is another bridge but it was closed off during our visit. There is also a decommissioned "jacuzzi" as indicated by a sign. At the head of the trail is a shaded rest area with toilet if you want to have a picnic before or after the hike. We paid a dollar for each adult to enter the trail, which is not expansive as it still goes into the upkeep of the place.

It is a difficult way down and up but it is worth it. Keep in mind that the hike is pretty intense, especially if you add the hike down to the river. It is a peaceful and serene location with nobody there. There is a rainbow at the waterfall as well.
