My friends and I booked a car with europcar before arriving in Quito. Upon arrival, we were told the insurance was mandatory which doubled the price of the rental or they needed to place a $10k hold on my credit card. We declined and took a cab to town. However we later decided we preferred to rent a car for the day so we rented a car at the city center location expecting to have to pay for the insurance. Upon arrival, they told us the car we rented was not available but they could get us an SUV from the airport in 30 minutes if we agreed to pay even more for the insurance. We reluctantly agreed. It took over an hour to get the car to us. We confirmed multiple times there wouldn't be any penalty for returning the car early. However upon returning the car only 12 hours later, we ended up paying $200 for a trip to mindo and back and one of the rear tail lights were out. We could have paid a private driver for considerably less. I'll never rent from europcar again after continually being ripped off. Edit: In response to "response from the owner": Please provide email for me to send rental agreement number. I understand where the costs came from. I can explain to everyone else too. We rented a car for two days which came with 200 km which is not enough to get to mindo and back. Original quote online for 2 days in an automatic car INCLUDING insurance was $109. Upon arrival we were told it would be $150 for 2 days because the only automatic car available, even at the airport, was an SUV and the insurance was more expensive. Upon returning the car it was an additional $45 for mileage overage. In the final receipt, we were charged for a 1 day rental with only 100 km despite being assured there was no penalty for returning the car early. I understand where the charges come from but they were excessive and deceitful and we wasted over an hour of our day due to you not having the car we reserved without the courtesy to call us and tell us. For a 12 hour car rental we could have paid someone to drive us that distance for less than half the price and I know because I quoted it out!

Very nice experience! Gonzalo did the best job very professionally and is a super friendly guy. Highly recommended . We started with a small car and no problems upgrading it. Gonzalo is very good in English- for those of you who are not perfect in Spanish

The criminals at Europcar Quito Norte charged me 900 dollars because my car got towed by the transit police (also corrupt criminals who almost wouldn't give me my suitcase out of the car which had my passport, credit card and computer in it) and they didn't have the intelligence to get it back for a whole week. My original 6 day rental was 100 dollars (plus 120 for the mandatory insurance).. the transit police told me it would only cost 80 for the tow. Instead this company failed to get their car back for a week, racked up a 400 dollar bill with the police, then charged me an additional 500 to "rent" it for that time, which included insurance even though nobody was driving it. Someone also stole my paintings out of the car at some point - Update: What are you surprised by? That you ripped off a customer who was already in a tough position? I will not be giving you my email because the only way you can make this right is to not have charged me that absurd amount. Besides, you already have it from my reservation.. use your brain

Awful experience. Made a reservation over the phone, and had an emailed confirmation # with a “guaranteed” price. Went to pick it up and they seemingly “didn’t have the reservation”, yet they knew exactly how much I was supposed to pay. They then proceeded to offer me a smaller car at a more expensive price, insisted that insurance is required, and told me I had to pay $400 for 3 days instead of the $282 for 7 days that I booked over the phone. They are really good and well trained at lying to your face. Too bad they take advantage of foreigners like this. What else can you do when you are at the car pickup and need the car? Don’t go here.
