At present the institute, in its two modalities; secondary (day) and higher (night), educates around 1,500 students. As it is an institution of secondary education, it welcomes students from the last three years of basic education (8th, 9th and 10th), and the three from Baccalaureate. Due to its status as a technological institute, the institution, in addition to granting bachelor of science degrees with specialization in physical-mathematics, chemical-biological, social, and computer science, also offers higher studies in technology in sports technique. As of 2011, the mentioned specializations are eliminated by the Unified General Baccalaureate. [3] The institute also has modern laboratories for biology, computer science, physics, and chemistry. Other facilities offered by the campus of the institute are: archaeological museum, semi-Olympic swimming pool, and other sports infrastructures for football, basketball, tennis, volleyball. International Baccalaureate As part of the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in tax colleges throughout Ecuador, the institute has been one of the tax colleges to obtain international certification, which enables it to offer this program for 5 years from the year school year 2014-2015. The International Baccalaureate offers a program of subjects that belong to six study groups: one subject is chosen from each group. Of the total of six subjects chosen, three of them are studied at a higher level and the other three at a medium level. In addition to the six subjects, there are three fundamental components in the process of obtaining the Diploma: taking the subject Theory of Knowledge, carrying out the CAS activities (Creativity, Action and Service) and preparing a monograph on a specific topic under the guidance of a teacher tutor. The subject group includes: Language and Literature Studies, Language Acquisition (English), Individuals and Society (History), Experimental Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science and Art The "Bolívar" Educational Unit is a public institution of secular secondary and higher education in the city of Tulcán, Ecuador. It was founded in 1896 by the then president of Ecuador, Eloy Alfaro, thus becoming the first secular school in the country.
