I’m writing this about 10 years too late.
In June 2011 I was backpacking around SA with my gf. After 2 months I’d read everything I could buy, swap or borrow. We did everything overland so there were many bus journeys of 24+ hours, and multiple viewings of subtitled Adam Sandler films weren’t doing it for me. Then we happened to walk past this place. What a find! I bought 8 novels, including 3 Nelson DeMille books (who I’d only just discovered), and had to throw out some clothes to fit them in the backpack!
The reason this place sticks in my mind so much is that it forms part of a story I tell a lot when talking about travel. I remember chatting to the owner, and he asked me what our plans were. I said I wasn’t sure, so he told me to write something down. I carried a small notebook with me wherever I went, and he proceeded to give me extremely detailed instructions and directions on how to get to an amazing place on the coast. I won’t say where as it was really unspoilt at the time, but these directions were literally along the lines of: get the evening bus to Samé, then the next morning walk to the collectivo station, get the number 5 which goes to this town, then wait until 10am, then get the number 26 and wait about an hour and a half until you pass this town, go up a small hill and just after the crest you’ll see a 15km mileage marker. Get out here and you’ll see a small path. Follow that path into the jungle until you see a gate. Go through and ask if they have a room. And guess what...we did it! We blindly followed these directions (naïveté of youth!), and made the most amazing discovery.
Glad to see the business is still thriving. I hope to be back one day!
That place has many books.
If you want some books you must get there and the owner was so friendly!
Best place for second hand books in English. They always have free coffee and great company
Really interesting collection.. excellent attention
I stood out there when it should’ve been open, pressed the button maybe 20 times, called the store, and I didn’t get a response. I don’t know what the problem is.
