There are times in which you experience something that you simply struggle to explain in words so others understand your experience. I struggle to find the words to explain our stay at Madre Tierra. I will do my best but could simply state this: When you arrive, your heart simply knows that you are home.
My husband and I stayed at Madre Tierra for several days and it was amazing. When we arrived the first day we said, "it can't get better than this!". Then the next day it got better and the next day even better and by the third day I told my husband that this place was so unique that words could not describe what we were experiencing.
Gail and Pete are simply the BEST hosts one could ever ask for. Every staff member was warm, friendly, caring and were vested in doing their very best to provide us an excellent stay and experience. The private chef who cooked our meals amazed us at each and every meal. The food was fresh and flavorful.
We were part of a group of 4 couples that decided to escape for a few days and enjoy each others company and little did we know we would find new friends and a further extension of our Ecuadorian family.
If you are considering Madre Tierra, simply go. You will NOT be disappointed. We live only a short drive away from Madre Tierra and I assure you, that we are already discussing our next trip.
We are in southern Ecuador for an extended period and were looking for a place to escape and relax for a week. Madre Tierra was recommended to us by a friend and the experience did not disappoint!
The facility is rustic and quaint, but still has all the modern amenities. We stayed in room 9 at the top of the hill which had a nice patio with a table and sweeping views of the valley below—a great location to hang out, play cards, have a snack, or read a book. The room came with comfortable beds and a hot shower, and the cool Vilcabamba night air was perfect for a great night’s sleep.
We didn’t avail ourselves of the spa services, but for very reasonable prices there are a variety of treatments available; they need to be scheduled in advance. The property has a small pool that is fed by a great waterfall feature. The pool is on the cold side so it is best reserved for particularly hot afternoons. There is also a small conference facility that doesn’t seem to get much use but has an awesome ping pong table as well as projection and audio equipment to do a movie night. Overall, the property is lush with foliage and very peaceful, it is just a great place to unwind. For those who need to work when they travel, Internet quality was generally very good.
The food service is really excellent and I would recommend eating most meals on the property, if they are serving. In the morning they have a nice breakfast menu and really good coffee; most people can fill their bellies for five bucks or less. Dinners are creative, hearty, and freshly cooked. Basic bar fare is also available.
A mile away, Vilcabamba is a sleepy little town that is good for an afternoon stroll, and there is plenty to explore in the surrounding valley. Some food options you might consider include: fish tacos at Agave Blu, yucca fries UFO, and fudge at Beverly Hills Coffee.
I highly recommend Madre Tierra for extended stays in southern Ecuador!
The easy vibe this place has must be experienced, I cannot describe it. Our room had a gorgeous view of of the mountains, but I especially enjoyed watching the twinkling lights of the town come on as night fell over the valley. All staff were warm and welcoming and our host was a delight to converse with. I do not hesitate to say our stay at Madre Tierra was a lovely one!
What can I say, the food, the hospitality and the accommodations were all that one could ask for and receive. The modalities we received at the Spa , along with the personal touch made it all worthwhile. The owners Peter and Gail were the reason why our stay at Madre Tierra was very enjoyable. We will be returning!. This is a must stay for all.
Excellent organic food. The tiny room next to the hobbit room was perfect. The family run business is very welcoming. The cost for everything is very affordable. The mud bath was much different than a clay bath. The room was cool and the mud dried on your skin in the cool air with your feet in the hot water. I'd suggest another treatment & use a translation App to communicate if not fluent in Spanish. I highly recommend this family owned business for dining, spa treatment or overnight stay.
